Budget vote & trustee election is May 18, 2010

Despite one of the worst economic crises in history,  Eastchester taxpayers are being asked to give
the school district another increase.  The adopted 2010/11 budget is $69M, an increase of $1.9 million
which is a budget increase of 2.43% and an estimated tax increase of 3.22%.

The district is blaming the state for cuts but that is a small piece - the real problem is the overly
generous salaries and benefits.   Contrary to modern myth, teachers’ compensation is quite
generous.  About two-thirds of the district’s teachers earned over $100K in 2008 while working only 9
months and contributing a pittance to health care and retirement.     Add in other benefits like
accumulated sick days and a state tax-free retirement and you realize what a sweet deal it is.

Of course the district maintains there is nothing they can do, “contractual and state obligations” you
understand.  Really?   The district had a chance to address teacher compensation but instead gave the
teachers a contract extension with modest cuts and minimal givebacks.

Under the Freedom of Information Act, CARE has obtained the  memorandum of agreement  with the
terms of the extension.   What does it mean to you the taxpayer?

FACT:   We are now spending more per student per year than it costs to send a child to a SUNY
college.   It is over $21K/child/year in Eastchester vs. the SUNY system's typical cost of about
$19.5K/child/year (which includes tuition and fees, room and board, books, etc.).
